Scott Pelley Gets the Boot from 60 Minutes — And His Boss Told Everyone Exactly Why

Veteran CBS journalist Scott Pelley — the man who spent nearly four decades lecturing America from behind the most prestigious desk in broadcast news — just got fired from 60 Minutes. For cause. And the best part? The executive producer put it in writing so nobody has to guess why, as reported by Newsmax.

Turns out the only thing less popular than his ratings was his attitude in the break room.

Pelley, who joined CBS News back in 1989 and became a 60 Minutes correspondent in 2004, apparently couldn't handle the new management. According to journalist Dylan Byers, who disclosed the termination letter, new executive producer Nick Bilton accused Pelley of having "hijacked" a staff meeting on Monday to disparage Bilton and his qualifications. By Tuesday, Pelley was out.

That's a speed record even by corporate standards. One day you're king of the conference room, the next day you're updating your LinkedIn.

Bilton's termination letter didn't leave much room for interpretation. He wrote that Pelley's actions demonstrated an "unwillingness to work collaboratively with the show's leadership team." Translation: Pelley thought he was bigger than the show, and the show disagreed.

For context, CBS News has been undergoing major changes. Bari Weiss was brought in as CBS News Editor-in-Chief, and Bilton took over as executive producer of 60 Minutes. Former CBS News President and CEO Wendy McMahon and former executive producer Bill Owens are both out. Pelley apparently wasn't thrilled about the new direction, and he made that clear. At one point, according to reports from Variety and The Wall Street Journal, Pelley stated that Owens had lost "the independence that honest journalism requires."

The irony of Scott Pelley — a man who spent the Trump years treating every newscast like a personal editorial page — complaining about journalistic independence is just chef's kiss. This is the same guy who couldn't get through a broadcast without making sure everyone at home knew exactly how he felt about the 45th and 47th President. Now he's suddenly worried about editorial integrity?

Please.

The tensions reportedly involved concerns about editorial independence related to Trump litigation and merger approvals involving Paramount, the parent company. So the same media establishment that coordinated coverage to undermine a sitting president is now eating itself over who gets to control the narrative. We love to see it.

Pelley had a nearly four-decade career at CBS, and it ended with a "for cause" termination and a leaked letter. Not exactly the farewell tour he probably had in mind. No gold watch. No tearful goodbye segment. Just a door and directions to use it.

Here's the thing we all know but the mainstream media refuses to admit — the legacy media gatekeepers are being shown the gate. Pelley isn't the first, and he won't be the last. When your entire brand is built on telling half the country they're wrong about everything, eventually even your own bosses get tired of it.
