The measles outbreaks gave CNN a reason to put RFK Jr. on television. Dana Bash had a plan.
She would press the HHS Secretary on vaccine hesitancy — put him on the defensive, get him to apologize for not being a cheerleader for the CDC. It did not go that way.
Bash opened with a pointed accusation: "You are the HHS secretary, and you are talking about things that lead to vaccine hesitancy in this country."
Kennedy let her finish. Then: "Trump, as you recall, wanted to end the lockdowns. I think the thing that did the most damage to our country was the lockdowns."
He went further. Fauci's own diaries, Kennedy said, showed that "President Trump was calling him every day, trying to get him to reopen the country." The man the media turned into a villain for questioning Fauci was, by Fauci's own written account, pushing to end the restrictions while Fauci resisted.
Bash pivoted to vaccines. The science is settled, she said. "There is study after study after study. It's one of the most studied things out there in science."
Kennedy's response was two words: "You're repeating it like a parrot."
Bash: "So are you."
Kennedy: "You're repeating it like a parrot."
From there, Kennedy laid out the full case:
"Now we know that Anthony Fauci, who was the 'expert,' was lying about everything, about masks, about social distancing, about natural immunity, about the transmission from the vaccine, about the source of COVID."
He wasn't finished. "All you know how to do is repeat things that people told you and say, trust the experts."
Then came the challenge: "I've actually read the science. You don't want to come back here and debate the science."
Bash had no response on record.
Kennedy added one more: "Your job is to tell the truth to the American people."
That's the line CNN didn't expect. The anchor who showed up to lecture the HHS Secretary about vaccine hesitancy got a civics lesson instead. Dana Bash's job — she would tell you — is to hold government officials accountable. Kennedy held one of the most powerful institutions in science accountable on her air, and she handed him the microphone to do it.
"Anthony Fauci was mismanaging the COVID pandemic and he was doing it under the Biden Administration," Kennedy said.
For five years the press managed the story: Fauci was the adult in the room, Trump was the chaos agent, and anyone who questioned the lockdowns, the masks, the lab leak was a conspiracy theorist. Fauci's diaries tell a different story. Trump was calling to reopen the country. Fauci was the obstacle.
Bash asked Kennedy to say something reassuring to vaccine-hesitant parents. He complied — then went somewhere she hadn't prepared for.
She had a script. He had read the science.
