In a recent briefing to lawmakers, Biden administration officials disclosed alarming statistics about the current state of illegal immigration. According to a Fox News report, officials from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) informed representatives from both the House and Senate Judiciary and Homeland Security committees, as well as the Arizona congressional delegation, that approximately 670,000 migrants, labeled as “gotaways,” managed to elude Border Patrol during fiscal year 2023.
Additionally, these officials shared that about 5,000 illegal immigrants are being allowed entry into the United States daily. These individuals are then aided by non-governmental organizations (NGOs) to reach their intended destinations within the country. At this rate, it is projected that nearly 1.8 million illegal immigrants could be admitted into the U.S. over the course of a year.
This revelation comes in the wake of a record-breaking surge in migrant encounters by the Border Patrol, with a single-day peak exceeding 12,000 encounters. The fiscal year 2023 has already witnessed an unprecedented 2.4 million encounters, including a monthly record of over 260,000 in September. Since the start of the new fiscal year on October 1, there have been over 440,000 encounters.
The report also indicated that on average, 1,600 migrants are being processed and released each day using humanitarian parole, facilitated through the CBP One app at various entry points. These migrants represent over 150 different nationalities.
When questioned about collaborative efforts with Mexico to regulate the influx of migrants to the southern U.S. border, a DHS official emphasized the focus on the “safety and security of noncitizens,” pointing out the dangers they face while illegally traveling on trains. However, the official did not elaborate on specific strategies to deter migrants from undertaking such hazardous journeys in the first place.
These latest figures from the Biden administration paint a stark picture of the ongoing challenges in managing immigration and border security in the United States.
