A recent poll conducted by the Washington Post and the University of Maryland’s Center for Democracy and Civic Engagement has revealed that nearly 40 percent of Americans believe President Joe Biden’s election was illegitimate. The poll, which was conducted in December 2022, found that 36 percent of Americans hold this view, marking a five percentage point increase from the previous year when it was at 31 percent.
The breakdown of these numbers shows that 9 percent of Democrats, 67 percent of Republicans, and 32 percent of Independents believe Biden’s election was illegitimate. This data underscores the deep divisions and polarization within the American electorate.
Interestingly, the poll also draws a parallel between this sentiment and the belief among some Americans in 2017 that former President Donald Trump was not legitimately elected. In that year, 42 percent of respondents questioned the legitimacy of Trump’s election. It’s worth noting that Trump’s opponent in the 2016 election, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, famously referred to him as an “illegitimate” president and claimed he had “stolen” the election.
The increased talk about the legitimacy of Biden’s election comes as the new election year begins and as the president faces challenges in maintaining support, especially among black, Hispanic, and young voters, as indicated by a recent USA Today/Suffolk University poll.
The Washington Post/Suffolk University poll also highlighted that younger Americans are more likely to question the legitimacy of Biden’s election. Additionally, the poll found that Republicans are becoming less inclined to believe that Trump bears responsibility for the events of January 6, 2021, at the Capitol, with over 70 percent of Republicans expressing the opinion that too much attention is being given to the attack and that it’s time to move on.
Furthermore, the poll showed that nearly 70 percent of Republicans believe Trump is innocent of any criminal conspiracy to overturn the 2020 election, and 77 percent believe that he is being targeted for political reasons. In terms of disqualification from the presidency because of the events of January 6, less than half of Americans, specifically 46 percent, believe Trump should be disqualified.
It’s worth noting that some Democrat-elected judges and state officials in Democratic-controlled states have explored the possibility of disqualifying Trump from the ballot in future elections, notably in Colorado and Maine. This poll highlights the continuing debate and divisions surrounding the 2020 election and its aftermath in American politics.
Interesting that the same side (democrat) that claims to be fighting fascism, is employing the very tactics they claim to be against. Lawfare against a leading political opponent, media spreading disinformation to smear a leading political opponent, and and illegal moves to dilute the American citizens vote.
