In a recent interview, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis outlined his plans to tackle illegal immigration if elected president. He proposed empowering state and local law enforcement agencies to enforce immigration laws, marking a significant shift in the current approach to immigration control.
DeSantis shared these thoughts during an appearance on CBS News’ “Face The Nation.” He discussed the ongoing issue of illegal immigration into the U.S., emphasizing the need for more robust enforcement at the state and local levels.
“Although immigration is primarily a federal matter, there’s no reason states and local authorities can’t support federal efforts,” DeSantis said. “Currently, the federal government claims exclusive rights to enforce immigration laws based on the Constitution’s supremacy clause. However, they’re not fulfilling their duty to enforce these laws effectively.”
As president, DeSantis plans to authorize state and local entities to enforce immigration laws, as long as they adhere to federal guidelines. He pointed out that this approach wouldn’t undermine federal law but would help enforce it, particularly in situations where the federal government is failing to do so.
DeSantis highlighted Florida’s existing efforts in collaborating with the Coast Guard to intercept illegal immigrants from Caribbean islands. He noted the immediate enforcement of laws had a significant deterrent effect, as people were less likely to risk the dangerous journey if they knew they’d likely be sent back.
Applying this principle to the southern border, DeSantis argued that making it clear new arrivals would be returned to their home countries would drastically reduce the number of people attempting the journey. He believes that the prospect of firm enforcement would discourage people from paying traffickers and attempting illegal entry into the U.S.
DeSantis’s stance signals a firm approach to immigration, focusing on enhanced collaboration between federal and state authorities to ensure laws are enforced effectively and uniformly across the country.
Somebody needs to do something. If the federal governments wont do it than the states should be able to. This used to be the United States of America, now it is overrun by illegal invaders and I don’t know what you would call it when they are not even American citizens. This has got to stop or we will have no country left. What are the Democrats trying to do? Do they not care that they are killing this country. The taxpayers are being robbed to provide food, clothing, housing, anything they need and the American citizen is getting nothing for it. That’s the American peoples money and should not be spend on anything that doesn’t benefit the American people. Allowing these people to come here illegally is not only not benefitting the American people, it is taking the money that is supposed to help them and giving it to the people breaking our laws coming here illegally. I cannot believe the Democrats don’t care what is happening. Why isn’t something being done to stop this before it is too late if it isn’t already?

With basically no border, I feel our nation is gone. I live in California and this “Sanctuary State” is bankrupting the average citizens. We have thousands of homeless and as well as I can determine, the homeless are all citizens while the illegal immigrants are being placed in top notch hotels and even in veteran housing. They are given food stamps, housing, driver’s licenses and breaking the laws daily. Now Newsom is giving them free medical coverage – so legal residents are now paying for that. This has got to STOP. Congress needs to defund every Sanctuary city and state that allows all these illegals into our country or the USA will soon be gone for good. Impeach Biden, impeach Mayorkas, impeach Gavin Newsom. Give them huge fines so they will understand what it means to be broke. Do whatever it takes to stop this nonsense. Defund the state of Maine and New York for their nonsense too!
Nothing, as you say, is being done by the senile old Biden because he is being coached by some one else. That party could give a damn less what happens to America. In my thinking that party should have been deported long ago. If democrats and also republicans had the best interest of our nation and future of our children at heart we wouldn’t have most of todays problems. We have demand term limits and your out. I also think it would nice if we could demand passing a test on the constitution of the USA. The test could be on a volunteer basis with a score of 80 or more to pass and administered by someone from candidates district. What? Wake up Marv you are dreaming.
Good idea, Marvin. I have often considered/wondered if every person who takes the oath of office understands and is truthful and sincere about their pledge. It seems that one cannot be elected to office or chosen to serve in office without Party support (financially and otherwise). Maybe all who make the pledge should have it read to them on a weekly basis and the Constitution of the United States read to them periodically. Based on what I see and hear, I often get perplexed and angry with both Parties. Hatred and division is no way to run a country.
Fact – America needs and must have immigrants. But they must go through the process as determined by our laws. President Biden made a disastrous mistake when he spoke publicly of welcoming immigrants. This opened the flood gates for millions from over one hundred countries, the vast majority claiming being threatened by their countries rulers which is not necessarily the case. Most just want a better life for themselves and their children – but many are here to cause havoc, division and destruction. Past Presidents, our current President and our Congress are all to blame for not resolving this problem. Lying, misinformation and playing politics is divisive and harmful to our country. I say – solve the problem now or get out of the way, resign your position and let someone who is really interested in America make wise and appropriate decisions.
Tell this to the democrats, they believe that their president (Biden) is the best president ever. Democrats say he had done so much for this country that everything is good. But ask to name something good that he has done they can’t answer. Democrats don’t want facts.
