After the discovery of him removing former President Donald Trump’s campaign billboards, a Democratic candidate for the House of Representatives in North Carolina was arrested and charged.
Lowell Simon, the chairman of the Moore County Democratic Party, stated on Thursday night that he “should not have done that” and that he had “removed” the Trump signs.
Simon took to his statement and claimed, “My worst angels got the better of me and I removed the signs. That was a poor decision on my part. I didn’t sneak around doing it at night or anything. When I finished it, it was five o’clock in the afternoon.”
An official who was “responding to an unrelated call” observed Simon taking down campaign posters in a neighborhood and “went to Simon’s residence,” the Moore County Sheriff’s Office posted on Facebook.
On October 10, 2024, at around 5:25 p.m., a sheriff’s deputy saw Lowell Simon removing campaign signs from the side of the road along Seven Lakes Drive. When the deputy went to look into it later, after having been called to an unrelated call, he found the indicators in Simon’s car. Simon admitted removing the political signs, which were subsequently located and returned to their original owner.”
According to the sheriff’s office, Simon faces charges related to “two counts of a misdemeanor larceny of political signs.”
In reference to the signs’ removal, the Moore County Sheriff’s Office said in a Friday Facebook post that “a warrant for his arrest was issued.”
As per the sheriff’s office, Simon was “released with a promise to appear in court” and is scheduled to appear before the Moore County District Court.
Simon said, “If people are going to break laws, there should be consequences,” as reported by WRAL News. In addition, he said, he had to deal with stolen and vandalized Democratic signs. But the law must be applied consistently. “Even though I acknowledge that sometimes you capture the perpetrator and other times you don’t, it still needs to be applied fairly.”
