Immigrants from China claim that videos on TikTok are providing instructions on how to enter the US illegally, which is a major concern as thousands of migrants keep pouring into the southern border.
A recent episode of CBS’s “60 Minutes” showed scores of migrants sneaking into the United States via a crack in the border barrier at Jacumba, California, some 60 miles east of San Diego.
There has been a recent influx of Chinese immigrants, with many of them requesting political asylum.
According to some border crossers, it took them forty days and seven nations to get to Mexico.
In a span of four days, workers recorded approximately 600 individuals, with human traffickers reportedly dropping off a fresh truck of migrants every half hour.
The 37-year-old Chinese lady who spoke with “60 Minutes” said that she found out about the entrance on the video sharing platform TikTok.
Users may obtain guides on the Chinese-run social networking site that show them how to identify openings in the border wall and even how to pay smugglers to transport them.
According to a representative from TikTok, the company is against human smuggling and takes down videos that promote it.
In the meantime, according to its website, TikTok offers a platform where “survivors of human trafficking can tell their tales and for migrants and refugees to be able to chronicle their journeys, thus, we give a space to do so.”
TikTok is just “inaccessible” in mainland China, not outlawed. Douyin is the national platform, and in order to use it, you need a Chinese phone number.
Yet, many have discovered ways to bypass Douyin and utilize TikTok instead. For example, they have installed third-party systems into their mobile phones or simply haven’t inserted a China SIM card.
Douyin, developed by ByteDance, debuted in 2016, and towards the end of the same year, the business introduced TikTok as an international substitute.
Estimates put the number of Chinese nationals arrested at 37,000 in 2023, according to statistics from U.S. Customs and Border Protection.
The number of Chinese immigrants given refuge is 2,681, which is equal to 55%, according to the Department of Justice.
Meanwhile, immigration reform remains a prominent topic leading up to the 2024 election, despite Republicans in the Senate defeating the most recent border measure.
First China pays biden millions to let them fly their spy balloon across the USA to map out all our military bases, Now he lets them send thousands of CCP agents in to complete the invasion. This crazy are they being checked for COVID.
Where are all these people going, once they enter the US? I don’t see any Chinese people sitting on curbs in N.Y. or Chicago. Are they being picked up and taken to all the land that China has been buying up in the US?
