In a surprising twist, Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson, who publicly advocates for his city as a sanctuary for illegal immigrants, has recently enacted severe restrictions targeting bus companies responsible for transporting these individuals to Chicago. This decision, detailed in a Chicago Tribune report, starkly contrasts with Johnson’s “welcoming city” rhetoric.
The new rules, discreetly passed last November by Johnson and the city council, have led to a barrage of fines and 55 lawsuits against bus companies labeled as “rogue” by Johnson for breaching these regulations. The crackdown primarily targets 77 bus operators, many of which are under contract with Texas to bring illegal immigrants from border areas to Chicago.
Cassio Mendoza, a spokesperson for the mayor’s office, defended the rules as a means to ensure migrant safety. He claimed Chicago remains open to asylum seekers, but emphasized the necessity of maintaining order and safety in line with the city’s regulations.
The restrictions include specific time windows for bus arrivals, limiting drop-offs to weekdays from 8:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., and capping the number of buses per hour. Additionally, bus companies now must obtain city approval for entry, granting Chicago officials substantial regulatory power.
The city’s actions also involve punitive measures like impounding buses violating these rules and imposing significant fines, starting at $3,000. These developments occur amidst Texas Governor Greg Abbott’s initiative of sending more than 16,000 illegal immigrants to Chicago, a move that’s part of a larger strategy in response to President Biden’s handling of the border crisis.
Mayor Johnson’s stringent approach has raised eyebrows, considering his previously stated welcoming stance towards illegal immigrants.
